Congressman Gerry Connolly (VA-11), former President of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) Parliamentary Assembly), Congressman Steny H. Hoyer (MD-05), former House Majority Leader, Congressmen Gregory W. Meeks (NY-05), Ranking Member of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, and William Keating (MA-09), Ranking Member of the Europe Subcommittee, and , issued the following statement on their Resolution introduced today which reaffirms the U.S. commitment to NATO and the principle of collective defense under Article 5 of the NATO treaty.
"For 75 years, the NATO alliance has been a pillar of global security, built on the treaty principle that an attack against one of us is an attack against all. That principle deters our adversaries, protects our people, and reinforces our collective strength—and it is non-negotiable. At a time when Russia, China, Iran, and other malign actors seek to challenge the foundations of international peace and security, and President Trump publicly scorns critical U.S. alliances, we must reaffirm that our commitment to NATO is ironclad, unshakable, and absolute. This resolution makes clear that NATO remains the strongest and most effective military alliance in the world, and that we must never waver in our duty to stand with our allies against threats to democracy, sovereignty, and international order.” The Resolution would:
