Connolly Statement on Trump's Willingness to Recognize Russia's Illegal Annexation of Crimea

Congressman Gerald E. Connolly (D-VA), a senior member of the House Committee on Foreign Affairs and the former President of the NATO Parliamentary Assembly, released the following statement on President Donald Trump's proposal to recognize Russia's illegal annexation of Crimea as part of a larger agreement:

“The Trump Administration cannot allow the U.S. to recognize Putin’s forceful and illegal annexation of Crimea. For a decade, residents of Crimea have faced human rights violations at the hands of a war criminal. That's why I introduced a bipartisan bill to ensure that the U.S. does not recognize Russia’s sovereignty over Crimea, its airspace, or its territorial waters. As the U.S participates in negotiations, I strongly urge the Trump Administration to secure a just and lasting ceasefire that ends the war in Ukraine and protects its territorial integrity.”

Connolly, along with Congressman Joe Wilson (R-SC), is the author of the Crimea Annexation Non-Recognition Act and the Defending Ukraine’s Territorial Integrity Act. He is an original cosponsor of the Ukraine Support Act
