Congressman Gerald E. Connolly (D-VA), the former President of the NATO Parliamentary Assembly and a senior member of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, released the following statement to mark the 76th Anniversary of NATO:
“76 years ago, the founding members of NATO came together in the wreckage of World War II to establish a transatlantic alliance committed to peace, security, and democracy. The ironclad commitment to Article 5 stands as true today as it did 76 years ago. An armed attack against one NATO ally is an attack on all and that was clearly demonstrated when allies invoked Article 5 after the horrific 9/11 terrorist attacks against the U.S. While Ukrainians fearlessly fight to defend their democracy and people, NATO allies need to stand steadfast in their support to Ukraine and counter Russian aggression. As we commemorate this transatlantic Alliance, allies must reaffirm their commitment to defense and deterrence during a time in which democracy and global security are under immediate threat.” |
