Today SEEC Leadership, including Co-Chairs Reps. Gerry Connolly, Doris Matsui and Paul Tonko, and Vice-Chairs Reps. Matt Cartwright, Alan Lowenthal, Mike Quigley, Chellie Pingree and Jared Polis released the following statement in response to the Environmental Protection Agency’s announcement that the greenhouse gas standards for model year vehicles 2022-2025 are no longer appropriate, giving the EPA room to lower the standards finalized by the Obama Administration. “The benefits of the clean car standards developed by the Obama Administration are undeniable. They present an incredible opportunity to reduce dangerous air pollution, save consumers money, and create jobs in manufacturing. These standards, developed in coordination with the auto industry, can help keep our car companies and manufacturing sector competitive as the world races towards more fuel efficient vehicles. And they currently constitute one of our country’s best climate programs, since the transportation sector is now the country’s largest source of greenhouse gas pollution that cause climate change. Weakening these standards will be another step backwards for American innovation and the desperate need to act on climate change now.” The Sustainable Energy and Environment Coalition (SEEC) is a coalition of members of the U.S. House of Representatives that was founded in January 2009 to be a focused, active, and effective coalition for advancing “policies that promote clean energy technology innovation and domestic manufacturing, develop renewable energy resources, and create green collar jobs throughout the product supply-chain, and polices to help arrest global warming and protect our nation’s clean air, water and natural environment.” |
