Today, Rep. Gerald E. Connolly, Ranking Member of the Committee on Oversight and Government Reform, sent a letter to Postmaster General Louis DeJoy demanding a copy of the agreement the Postmaster General signed with DOGE, allowing Elon Musk to infiltrate the independent U.S. Postal Service, gain access to its data and systems, and make drastic cuts to the service.
“I write to request information about the agreement you signed with the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), outlined in your March 13, 2025, letter to Congress, which allows Elon Musk and DOGE to infiltrate the independent U.S. Postal Service (Postal Service). As you explain in the letter, this agreement authorizes DOGE to ‘assist’ the Postal Service, presumably in making drastic cuts to Americans’ mail service and firing thousands of postal employees. The actions of employees operating under the ‘DOGE’ moniker have thus far been shielded from transparency and accountability, but this cannot continue. Congress and the American people have a right to know the full details of the agreement, the extent to which you have enabled DOGE to apply its chainsaw approach to America’s most trusted institution, and how the actions of DOGE employees will undermine lifesaving services, expose sensitive taxpayer data, and contribute to other unlawful activity,” wrote Ranking Member Connolly.
In his letter, Ranking Member Connolly highlights that while Musk claims that all DOGE’s operations are “maximally transparent,” the American people have no real insight into the operations of DOGE:
“The Trump Administration has attempted to shield DOGE from government transparency laws, such as the Freedom of Information Act. The little that we do know about DOGE operations is deeply troubling. For example, Mr. Musk admitted that DOGE accidentally cancelled Ebola prevention efforts. Republicans across the country have heard from constituents who are irate that DOGE has access to the government’s centralized payment systems and that DOGE could expose sensitive taxpayer data through its reckless actions. What little additional information we have about DOGE comes from Mr. Musk’s posts to the social media platform he owns and DOGE’s own website, which was found to be riddled with factual errors. To understand DOGE’s impact on the Postal Service, I request that you provide the following information by March 31, 2025,” concluded the Ranking Member.
On March 17, 2025, in response to the agreement between Postal Service and DOGE, Ranking Member Connolly, Rep. Raja Krishnamoorthi, Ranking Member of the Subcommittee on Health Care and Financial Services, and Rep. Kweisi Mfume, Ranking Member of the Subcommittee on Government Operations and the Federal Workforce, led Committee Democrats in sending a letter to Chairman James Comer demanding an immediate public hearing on the Trump Administration and DOGE’s plans for the Postal Service.
Later that day, Ranking Member Connolly issued a statement after Postmaster General DeJoy sent a letter to Congress trying to explain why he entered the Postal Service into an agreement with the General Services Administration and DOGE representatives.
