Connolly to Oppose Republicans’ Funding Power Grab

Congressman Gerry Connolly (D-VA), the Ranking Member of the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform, released the following statement in opposition to Republicans’ full-year continuing resolution that cuts critical funding and further cedes congressional power to Donald Trump and Elon Musk:

“Last night, I hosted a telephone town hall with thousands of my constituents. I heard from them again what I have been hearing from Northern Virginians since January 20 – Donald Trump and Elon Musk don’t care about us, they don’t respect us, and they won’t do a damn thing to help us.

Our community has been rocked by this Administration’s wrecking ball approach to government. The unlawful and indiscriminate mass firings of civil servants. The sweeping cancellations of important federal contracts. The mindless and illegal freezing of congressionally appropriated funding. The chaos and cruelty Trump and Musk have inflicted on the people of Virginia’s 11th District is deliberate and unprecedented. I will not cast my vote for any piece of legislation that allows their rampage to continue.

The legislation we will consider today is not a clean continuing resolution. Far from it. It is a laundry list of extreme Republican priorities, including $13 billion in cuts to medical research, housing, election security, and more. And it freely hands even more unchecked power to the president and his unelected pet billionaire, Elon Musk.

House Republicans may be willing to abdicate their constitutional responsibilities. I am not. I will oppose this bill.”
