Connolly Statement on the Republican Budget Betrayal
Washington,
February 25, 2025
Congressman Gerry Connolly (D-VA), the Ranking Member of the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform, released the following statement in opposition to the House Republican budget that benefits billionaires at the expense of American families:
“If you’re wondering why House Republicans have been so quiet in the face of the cruelty and chaos caused by Elon Musk and Donald Trump, look no further than their budget resolution. It gives their game away entirely. Their budget is a textbook example of country club Republicans’ cozy deal with the MAGA agenda. They will tolerate all manner of sins committed by Musk and Trump so long as they secure a massive giveaway to billionaires and corporations at the expense of hardworking Americans. This isn’t just an abstract concept. This handout to billionaires is paid for by slashing vital programs that so many Americans rely on. Medicaid and the Affordable Care Act, which provide health care to millions of Americans, are set to lose nearly $1 trillion in funding. The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, which provides food assistance to roughly 40 million people including children, parents, older adults, and disabled people, gets a $200 billion cut. Education funding, including school meal programs, will be slashed by over $100 billion. These cuts are not merely figures on a page. They are unconscionable attacks on the very fabric of our society, jeopardizing the well-being of millions of Americans – seniors, children, veterans, and individuals with disabilities. Budgets are, at their core, statements of values. This budget represents a clear decision by House Republicans to prioritize the ultra-wealthy over every other American. It is a betrayal of the worst kind and will inflict unnecessary pain on American families at a time when they simply cannot afford it. Despite Donald Trump’s empty promises to bring down costs, the latest inflation report shows prices are rising fast. What do Republicans have to offer in response? $4 trillion in tax cuts for the ultra-wealthy that will balloon the deficit, driving costs even higher. House Democrats will not stand for this assault on the American people. We will stand united to fight this cruel and dangerous budget betrayal every step of the way.” |
