Connolly Statement on Treasury Inspector General Audit of Musk’s Access to Treasury System

Congressman Gerald E. Connolly, Ranking Member of the Committee on Oversight and Government Reform, released the following statement following reports that the Treasury Department’s Office of Inspector General is launching an audit of the federal government’s payment system after Elon Musk’s DOGE team accessed the system.

“Oversight Democrats were one of the first to throw the flag on this. Elon Musk and DOGE can’t be allowed to creep on Americans’ most sensitive data as they operate in the shadows. This is an important step, and inspectors general must be free to pursue their investigations without interference.”

On Feb. 6, 2025, Connolly led Oversight Committee Democrats in writing to Inspectors General raising concerns that unauthorized individuals had gained access to protected government networks and sensitive, potentially classified data, including at the Department of Treasury, the General Services Administration (GSA), the Office of Personnel Management (OPM), and the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID).
