Congressman Gerry Connolly Statement on Today’s Resignation By OPM Director Archuleta in Wake of OPM Data Breeches

Congressman Gerry Connolly (D-VA) issued the following statement in response to the resignation of Office of Personnel Management Director Katherine Archuleta in the wake of the OPM data breaches.  Connolly is Ranking Member of the House Oversight Subcommittee on Government Operations and co-author of the new Federal Information Technology Acquisition Reform Act (FITARA), which was signed into law by President Obama in December 2014. Last year’s passage of FITARA marked the first major comprehensive reform of laws governing how the federal government manages information technology since the 1996 enactment of the seminal Clinger-Cohen Act.

“I believe the steady drip, drip of bad news made this resignation inevitable,” Connolly said.

“However, I continue to believe there are much bigger issues involved in this breach that the federal government and Congress must address. They include organized Chinese cyber-attacks, the lack of investment in IT resources, and the need to retire antiquated legacy systems which makes us vulnerable.”
