Federal News Radio: D.C.-area lawmakers earn high marks on fed issues scorecard

Members of Congress representing the area scored highly yet again on this year’s report card put out by Federally Employed Women.

The first session of the 114th Congress overall had the best score ever recorded by FEW. In the House, 43 members received perfect scores on federal employee issues — with three members hailing from Virginia and six members from Maryland.

Reps. Gerry Connolly (D-Va.) and Chris Van Hollen (D-Md.) earned recognition as having some of the best federal employee records in the House. Connolly has earned a perfect score for seven years, while Van Hollen received a 100 percent rating for the past six years.

FEW ranks House members by voting records on issues that range from federal employee benefits to funding the government. The scorecard also includes voting records on equal rights and anti-discriminatory bills and resolutions.

“Not only did elected officials support federal workers through budget and appropriations bills, but they also responded to our members’ requests for them to co-sponsor important pieces of legislation of importance to FEW members,” said FEW National President Michelle Crockett.

Members of Congress in the DMV made a strong showing overall. The following representatives all received 100 percent scores this year:

  • Don Beyer (D-Va.)
  • Robert Scott (D-Va.)
  • John Sarbanes (D-Md.)
  • John Delaney (D-Md.)
  • Elijah Cummings (D-Md.)
  • Donna Edwards (D-Md.)
  • Steny Hoyer (D-Md.)

In the Senate, Brian Schatz (D-Hawaii), was the only member to receive a perfect score this year. However, Sens. Robert Menendez (D-N.J.) and Ben Cardin (D-Md.) earned top spots on FEW’s report card for the past seven and four years, respectively.

Sens. Richard Blumenthal (D-Conn.), Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.), Kirsten Gillibrand (D-N.Y.) and Tammy Baldwin (D-Wis.) all received 90 percent scores.

“We want to extend a special ‘thank you’ to these champions for consistently supporting federal worker and women’s issues,” Crockett said.
