Connolly Statement on Finalization of USPS’s Shortsighted Contract for New Gas-Powered Vehicles

Today, Congressman Gerry Connolly (D-VA), Chairman of the House Subcommittee on Government Operations, released the following statement regarding finalization of the U.S. Postal Service’s contract to replace its fleet of mail carriers with almost all gasoline-powered vehicles, despite President Biden’s clear and stated goal of electrifying the federal fleet.

“This is yet another willfully shortsighted decision by Postmaster General DeJoy that will prevent the Postal Service from reaching its full 21st Century potential. He has tethered USPS to a technology that is well on its way to obsolescence, striking a devastating blow to our climate, to our effort to lead the world in green technology, and to our beloved Postal Service. I echo with renewed fervor my call for his immediate removal by the Postal Board of Governors.”
