Connolly Statement on New Reports on ICE’s Farmville Detention Center

Today, Congressman Gerry Connolly (D-VA), Chairman of the House Subcommittee on Government Operations, released the following statement regarding reports that the Trump Administration’s actions directly sparked a COVID-19 outbreak at the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) detention center in Farmville, VA. Earlier this year, Connolly pushed ICE’s Acting Director to address the unacceptable conditions at the Farmville center, and called for the immediate release of all detainees from ICE detention facilities.

“The situation in Farmville is inhumane and unsustainable. I called for the full release of ICE detainees when we first heard reports of a mass outbreak in the facility back in May. I repeated that call to ICE again in July, as it became clear the situation was still deteriorating. This administration’s denial of science, and their indifference toward the health of immigrant communities, have caused lasting pain. The President must put an end to it.”
