Today, Rep. Gerald E. Connolly, the Chairman of the Subcommittee on Government Operations, sent a letter to Postmaster General Louis DeJoy in response to DeJoy’s inadequate response to the Subcommittee’s August 26, 2020, document request regarding his secret communications with the Trump campaign. Rep. Carolyn B. Maloney, the Chairwoman of the Committee on Oversight and Reform, issued a subpoena to DeJoy requiring him to produce these documents and a host of others to the Committee by September 16, 2020.

“To be clear, there is no prohibition on having personal friends who are involved in politics,” wrote Chairman Connolly.  “But you may not withhold information from Congress about official Postal Service matters by cloaking them in the guise of personal relationships.  Claiming a personal relationship does not absolve you of your responsibility to produce these documents to the Committee.”

On August 26, 2020, Subcommittee Chairman Connolly sent a follow-up letter to DeJoy after he reversed his testimony at a Committee hearing two days earlier, ultimately admitting that he did in fact communicate with individuals associated with the Trump campaign.

On September 2, 2020, DeJoy sent a response letter that failed to identify the individuals he spoke with—or when these conversations occurred.  He also failed to produce any of the requested documents.
