Maloney and Connolly Urge Senate to Pass Emergency Funding for Postal Service Facing Bankruptcy

Today, Rep. Carolyn B. Maloney, the Chairwoman of the Committee on Oversight and Reform, and Rep. Gerry Connolly, the Chairman of the Subcommittee on Government Operations, sent a letter to Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell urging the Senate to pass a stimulus package with emergency funds to help save the Postal Service from bankruptcy due to the impact of the coronavirus.

“This is a national emergency,” the Chairs wrote. “Like many other companies and industries across our country that are receiving substantial infusions of liquidity, the Postal Service needs our help now. Merely increasing the ability of the Postal Service to borrow money will not solve this problem.”

According to Postal Service officials, without immediate intervention, the precipitous drop off in mail use across the country due to the coronavirus pandemic could shutter the Postal Service’s doors as early as June.

The Postal Service’s essential deliveries of goods and services included more than one-million life-saving medications just last year.

Yesterday, House Democrats unveiled a stimulus package that would include provisions offered by Maloney and Connolly. These provisions would:
  • provide a $25 billion emergency appropriation;
  • eliminate the Postal Service’s current debt; and
  • require the Postal Service to prioritize medical deliveries and allow it flexibility to meet crisis conditions.
