Dear Neighbor,
I am thrilled to wish you a happy LGBTQ+ pride month!
Every year, we gather to celebrate the advancements we have made towards equality for people of all genders and sexual orientations. We have made tremendous progress over the last fifty years, and I would like to take a moment to recognize some of the work we’re doing in Washington to make sure that progress continues.
After the Supreme Court upended decades of precedent by overturning Roe v. Wade, my colleagues and I acted quickly to guarantee protections for other marginalized groups. To that end, I was an original cosponsor of the Respect for Marriage Act, a bill to codify the Hodges v. Obergefell decision and secure same-sex couples’ right to marry. President Biden signed that legislation in December 2022, cementing marriage equality into federal law.
I am also a proud original cosponsor of the Equality Act, which seeks to legally protect individuals from anti-LGBTQ+ discrimination. And I am an original cosponsor of two resolutions aimed at supporting the transgender community — H.Con.Res.2, which supports the goals and ideals of International Transgender Day of Visibility to provide a platform for one of the most vulnerable and discriminated-against groups in the nation, and H.Res.269, which recognizes the duty of the federal government to codify the rights of transgender and nonbinary people under the law, ensuring their access to medical care, shelter, safety, and economic security.
I am grateful for the advances made across the federal government to promote and protect the rights of LGBTQ+ individuals and families. From the State Department’s inclusion of an X gender marker on passports to the expansion of Social Security benefits for same-sex couples, President Biden and his Administration have been unabashed allies in this fight.
This pride month comes as LGBTQ+ rights are under attack from far-right extremists across the nation. I want to be perfectly clear: I will always fight for the LGBTQ+ community. Gay rights and transgender rights are human rights — full stop. I will always fight to protect and expand these vital civil liberties.
I encourage you to enjoy this month and take pride in the progress we have made. If my office or I can ever be of assistance, please do not hesitate to contact me at (703) 256-3071.
