Congressman Gerry Connolly Enewsletter
Russian Meddling

Dear Neighbor,

This week's Senate Intelligence Committee hearing and today's Mueller indictments make it absolutely clear: Russia attacked our democracy in 2016 and will try to do it again in 2018. The evidence is incontrovertible and not a matter of President Trump's opinion. All seventeen U.S. intelligence agencies are in agreement that the Russians directed a very pernicious campaign to influence the outcome of the election, yet President Trump has refused to direct these agencies to actively combat this kind of flagrant assault on our democratic institutions.

We need to do more to protect our electoral system and step up efforts to identify Russian propaganda. In Congress, I have led the effort to hold accountable any countries that try to influence elections. The Secure Our Democracy Act, legislation I have introduced with House Foreign Affairs Committee Ranking Member Eliot Engel, would sanction any foreign individual or entity found to have unlawfully meddled with a federal election, and would bar entry to the United States and freeze U.S.-based assets of anyone involved in such interference.

This is an issue that should trouble every American. One of our most cherished institutions, democratic elections free of foreign interference, was attacked. Congress must come together in a bipartisan fashion to demonstrate that there is a cost to such attacks on American democratic institutions.

I recently joined CNN to discuss this and other issues. You can watch here.
