Dear Neighbor,
Yesterday, while Donald Trump was busy crashing our economy, House Republicans forced through a budget that benefits billionaires like Elon Musk at the expense of American families. It is a betrayal of the worst kind.
Their budget strips health care away from millions and forces kids across America to go hungry, all for $7 trillion in giveaways to billionaires and large corporations. Nearly 1 in 3 Americans, including children, seniors, and people with disabilities, count on Medicaid. But the Republican budget includes at least $880 billion in cuts to the program, ripping away coverage and raising health care costs for millions. More than 40 million Americans rely on food assistance to help feed their families, but this budget slashes at least $230 billion from these essential programs.
Republicans want this massive handout to billionaires so badly that they are willing to sacrifice any pretense of "fiscal responsibility." Their budget will explode the deficit, ballooning it by trillions of dollars.
These draconian cuts could not come at a worse time, as our economy is teetering on the brink thanks to Donald Trump's reckless and misguided trade war. His tariffs constitute the largest tax increase on working Americans in nearly 50 years, costing the average American an additional $3,800. As prices continue to increase and retirement accounts are taking a beating, the Republican budget will only make things worse. It is a recipe for economic disaster.
Here in Northern Virginia, we will feel the effects of this budget betrayal:
- 36,000 people who receive coverage under the Affordable Care Act in VA-11 would see their average premium go up by $1,200 per year — a 68% increase.
- The 89,167 people on Medicaid in VA-11 are at risk of losing their health care entirely. This includes 41,476 children under the age of 19 and 10,000 seniors over 65.
- 14,000 people in VA-11 who count on SNAP to put food on the table are at risk of losing this assistance.
- 451,117 children in Virginia rely on free school lunches. This extreme budget will make it even harder for these kids to get the meals they need to grow and learn.
- The budget jeopardizes the futures of 23,811 students in VA-11 who use Pell grants to help afford their education.
Americans are tired of the chaos and cruelty. House Democrats stood united against this extreme budget yesterday, and we will continue to fight back against these attacks on our families, our values, and our economy.
