Dear Neighbor,
Last night, the Rule of Law prevailed.
This is a serious moment for our country. For the first time in our history, a former President has been found guilty of felony crimes. Let’s be very clear about what happened here:
Donald Trump falsified business records to cover up payments he made to a porn star in order to keep her quiet about their affair. He did this to prevent that information from becoming public before the 2016 election. That is a crime.
This is how our justice system is supposed to work. An American citizen was indicted on 34 felony counts. The charges were explicitly outlined in court, and Donald Trump acknowledged that he understood the charges. A jury of his peers was selected with significant input from both the prosecution and the defense. Both sides were able to present evidence and witnesses to the jury. Each side was able to question the other’s witnesses. Donald Trump chose not to testify in his own defense, despite having the clear right to do so. The jury, after a long trial and a thorough review of the evidence and testimony, found the former President guilty on every count he faced.
That is how we got here. The system worked just as it would for you or for me. Justice has been served.
No one is above the law.
