Dear Neighbor,
It's finally here! This week, I joined leaders from across the region to celebrate the grand opening of Metro's Silver Line extension to Dulles and beyond.
I have been proud to champion the Silver Line for nearly three decades — first as a Fairfax County Supervisor tasked with rezoning Tysons for transit, then as Chairman of the Board during the battles to get the project back on track, and finally in Congress to help ink the final funding deal and conduct oversight of Silver Line construction.
So I know this extension has been a long time coming, and I know its completion has not been easy. But it is worth it.
Already, the Silver Line is giving rise to a corridor that will be the economic engine of Virginia for generations to come. Just look at what Phase 1 of the Silver Line has already done for Tysons — spurring 40% population growth in the past decade, 3 times faster than the region as the whole, and making Tysons home to 20% of the county's private sector jobs.
I want to thank all the local and regional leaders who made this moment possible. And I want to give a particular shout out to the unsung heroes — the laborers, engineers, planners, and other staff — who have, in some cases, spent their whole careers working tirelessly to move this project always forward.
I am excited for this new chapter in Metro’s history, and I can’t wait for Northern Virginians and all who visit our communities to enjoy the benefits of the newly completed Silver Line.
