We just made history!

The House has passed the Respect for Marriage Act for the final time, sending the legislation to President Biden's desk for his signature. This bill is a major victory for freedom, dignity and equality — ensuring the federal government can never again keep you from marrying the person you love. I was proud to vote for it.

The Respect for Marriage Act, which was first passed by House Democrats in July, enshrines marriage equality for same sex and interracial couples into federal law. It also finally repeals the discriminatory and unconstitutional Defense of Marriage Act so that no future Administration or Congress can wield this appalling policy as a weapon against the LGBTQ+ community.

For millions of Americans, the Respect for Marriage Act means safety and security in the lives they have built together, free from the fear that their families might be ripped apart by right-wing activists and courts.

As radical Justices and extreme Republican politicians continue their assault on freedom, Democrats will never stop fighting for equal rights and equal justice – for every American, everywhere.
