Our Hearing with the Postmaster General
Dear Neighbor,

Yesterday, Postmaster General Louis DeJoy and Mike Duncan, the Chairman of the Postal Board of Governors, appeared before the House Oversight and Reform Committee to answer for their roles in this administration's outrageous attempts to sabotage the US Postal Service.

For years, I have made it my mission as Chairman of the Subcommittee on Government Operations to improve the Postal Service and protect it from the very politicization we are witnessing right now. So I was eager to question the Postmaster General to determine just how much influence Donald Trump and his campaign have over his decisionmaking process as the new CEO of the USPS.

His answers, I'm afraid, were incredibly troubling. Just two days before our hearing, Mr. DeJoy testified before the Senate, where he flatly denied having had any interaction with the Trump reelection campaign. I pressed him on this very issue, and finally got him to admit the truth:

Mr. DeJoy did, in fact, have contact with the Trump campaign.

You can watch our exchange here and below, and you'll find video of my opening statement here.

The fight to save the Post Office is a fight for the very soul of our democracy. I will not back down, and House Democrats will not rest until we get to the bottom of this sordid ordeal.

On Saturday, the House passed the Delivering for America Act, which would provide the USPS with $25 billion in emergency assistance. The Heroes Act, which passed the House in May, also included this funding to keep the Postal Service afloat as it grapples with a sharp decline in mail volume caused by the pandemic.

I proudly supported both pieces of legislation. But the ball is now in Mitch McConnell's court, and I will continue to call on him to act immediately.

The American people expect, and deserve, nothing less.

Please continue to take care of yourselves and each other, and remember that my office is here to help. Be sure to visit the COVID-19 page on my website for more information and resources. If you have any questions or concerns, or if you need assistance, please don't hesitate to call us at (703) 256-3071.

Sincerely,

Gerald E. Connolly
Member of Congress
