Dear Neighbor,
This month, I visited Electrify America, a fast charging station for Electric Vehicles (EVs) in Virginia’s 11th District. Our investment in EVs is critical as our nation works to combat climate change, and it has been an issue I’ve been passionate about during my career as your representative.
The transportation sector is the largest source of carbon pollution in the United States. Robust investments in EV production and the use of EVs across various sectors of transportation could get America nearly 25% of the way to meeting our 2030 greenhouse gas reduction targets.
That’s why I have been proud to support legislation that invests in making EVs more accessible to American families and expands EV infrastructure. I am a co-sponsor of the Electric Vehicles for Underserved Communities Act, which would require the Department of Energy to award grants that make electric vehicle charging infrastructure like Electrify America more accessible to underserved communities around the United States.
Additionally, I led a letter with my fellow co-Chair of the House Green Dogs Congresswoman Doris Matsui to push for increased funding for EVs to facilitate cleaner transportation and build healthier American communities. Federal investment will also ensure America is a leader on the global scale in the economic transition towards EVs.
Congressional Democrats are pushing for a tax credit for EVs, slashing the effective price by over $12,000. We have already dedicated $5 billion for a national charging network in the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act, and I am excited to see expanded eligibility for electric charging infrastructure and prioritized investments in clean energy.
Children in the United States largely rely on school buses to get to and from school, and they deserve to breathe clean air. That is why I am a proud cosponsor of the Clean Commute for Kids Act, which requires the EPA to provide financial assistance to replace gas-guzzling school buses with zero-emission buses.
In keeping with his mission to combat climate change, President Biden signed the American Rescue Plan’s Electric School Bus Rebate into law. This program provides nearly $7 million for school districts in underserved communities to replace diesel buses with new EVs. The Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act includes measures to modernize our school buses as well, with an historic $5 billion for the replacement of buses with zero-emission ones, prioritizing low-income, rural, and Tribal schools.
During the month of April, especially on Earth Day, we are reminded more than ever how important it is to preserve clean air, water, and land for our future generations. That is why I will continue fighting for investments in Electric Vehicles, which will help curb the climate crisis and provide clean air for all Americans.
