Connolly Statement on Biden Administration’s National Cyber Workforce and Education Strategy

Washington, D.C. – Congressman Gerry Connolly (D-VA), Ranking Member on the House Cybersecurity, Information Technology, and Government Innovation subcommittee, released the following statement on the Biden Administration’s National Cyber Workforce and Education Strategy.

“Last year, the United States Government was the target of almost 10 percent of all recorded public sector cyberattacks worldwide and these threats continue to grow throughout 2023. We need to make sure we have a cyber workforce that can meet the growing challenges.  In response, the Biden-Harris Administration released their National Cyber Workforce and Education Strategy (NCWES). NCWES takes a holistic approach to upskilling our country by investing in K-12 cyber education, providing leading-edge training to our dedicated federal employees, and partnering with the private sector to expand internship and fellowship programs to increase our cyber workforce.

“The strategy purposefully builds on the groundwork already laid out in the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, CHIPS and Science Act, and the Inflation Reduction Act to focus and strengthen middle class working families by attracting diverse, skills-based hires to fill key cyber jobs within our government agencies.

“This plan would provide more Americans with the opportunity to pursue cyber careers and make a meaningful contribution to our national security and global competitive edge. I look forward to working with stakeholders– including educators, industry, and government leaders to meet this mission.”

The Biden-Harris Administration’s National Cyber Workforce and Education Strategy (NCWES) is a first-of-its-kind comprehensive approach aimed at addressing both immediate and long-term cyber workforce needs. Filling the hundreds of thousands of cyber job vacancies across our nation is a national security imperative and the Administration is making generational investments to prepare our country to lead in the digital economy. The NCWES is positioned to empower every American seeking to participate in our digital ecosystem and underscores the critical need to fill a vast number of vacant cyber jobs.
